Posticum - The place of meetings

"There is a beautiful, life-giving oasis in Oradea, its name is Posticum!"

Brother Csaba Böjte

The Posticum in Oradea is an open-minded spiritual, cultural center and guesthouse. It lies along borders not only geographically, but also culturally and religiously. An “island on the mainland” on the border of speech and silence. Due to its unique position, it plays a mediating role between nations, cultures, religions and social groups.

Spiritual and cultural center

"I was amazed by the Posticum - it gives me hope that there are still places like this in the world; it's as if I were living in the dream world of my adolescence: on the way to the Grail (a seemingly hopeless journey), I suddenly find a friendly shelter where I can draw strength again, because here they "know something" and show me the way. It was good here, thank you - we hope to see you again..."

Tamás Vekerdy, March 28, 2014.

SPIRITUALITY

Posticum regularly hosts spiritual exercises and retreats. In recent years, we have hosted spiritual leaders and masters such as Jesuit Father Péter Mustó, Swiss Jesuit and Zen master Niklaus Brantschen, Japanese Zen master and Hungarian student Taigen Sódó Harada, István Szaladják “Taikyo”, American Zen teacher Jeff Shore living in Kyoto, the Indian “dancing Jesuit”, Saju George, and Christian spiritual leader Eszter Tariska living in Debrecen. In addition to retreats, the House also provides space for everyday yoga and Zen practice, as well as Christian contemplative prayer groups. Within the walls of our chapel, all these paths can coexist peacefully, and we believe that they even strengthen each other.

“I appreciate Posticum’s effort to convey modern Christian thought and culture.”

Zoltán Endreffy, October 19, 2002.

"I completely agree with all of this."

Béla Somfai SJ, October 19, 2002.

Posticum does not want to give anyone ready-made answers, it only creates the external conditions for everyone to walk their own path, feel their own feelings, think their own thoughts. We follow this path because it is the only path worthy of a mature, free and responsible person.

ART

Since its opening in 2000, Posticum has enriched the cultural life of Oradea with countless events, be it exhibitions, classical music courses or jazz concerts. Almost all the significant representatives of contemporary Hungarian and Romanian jazz have performed here, including Elemér Balázs, Béla Szakcsi-Lakatos, György Vukán, Pedro Negrescu, Mircea Tiberian, Harry Tavitian and Marius Pop. The chapel and the ballroom have hosted exhibitions by numerous artists – such as Gábor Karátson and László Balázs – but we also organize readings and book presentations in these beautiful spaces.

"He's leaving,

that is, it reaches into the distance

Reaches into the distance

and that means he will return.”

Gábor Karátson, August 31, 2007.

CARITAS AND CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS

From the very beginning, supporting people in need – the deprived and the disabled – has been important to us. In this spirit, we have been organizing our Egalitas restaurant program for years, where mentally disabled young people cook and serve food to able-bodied people. Another project that we have been running for many years is the school bag program: we bring used bags in good condition from Switzerland and distribute them among needy children in Romania.

“In November 2012, I lived under the roof of Posticum and experienced the generous spirit of this enterprise for the first time. I was reminded of the spirit of the Menedék Program in Budapest, and the spirit of ‘slow medicine’ at Laguna Honda Hospital (God’s Hotel) in San Francisco, where the sick and poor received human, personal, loving attention for free. After all, really, in reality, one person cannot help another very much, but at the same time, one can certainly: give shelter, give accommodation to someone who is homeless, leave him alone and trust that, like a wounded bird, as soon as he rests, as soon as he regains strength, he will fly away into his own life, following his own desires. Imre Rencsik always keeps the back door open.”

Andras Feldmar, December 12, 2012.

Guesthouse

We welcome those who wish to relax and recharge in our tastefully furnished, bright, air-conditioned, 1-4-bed rooms. The guesthouse is located in a suburban area of Nagyvárad, yet close to the center, and has a parking space, a spacious terrace and garden, and a high-class restaurant. Our hotel guests can also join in the meditation and yoga practices, as well as cultural and artistic programs taking place in the house.

Oradea's rich historical past, beautiful Art Nouveau palaces, and vibrant theater and music scene are also great attractions. Those who want to relax can visit the surrounding spas in winter and summer - the most famous of which is Félixfürdő - and the city's huge aquapark, Nymphaea. Don't miss the Oradea Zoo with children!

Room rental and kitchen service

Posticum offers several rooms as venues for events, whether it's a conference, further training, podium discussion, business meeting, banquet or alumni meeting.

Posticum is the only accommodation facility in Oradea with a chapel, making it an ideal venue for weddings, baptisms, retreats and other events that require a sacred space. The exciting architecture of our chapel is combined with the majesty of a 19th century organ.

The interior of our restaurant was designed by Attila Kertész, an interior designer and furniture designer from Budapest, and the furniture was made by János Korenyák, a master carpenter from Nagyvárad. The restaurant can be rented for formal lunches or dinners, family and friends gatherings, wine tastings and similar events. The quality of our culinary service is guaranteed by our experienced chefs and quality ingredients.

Our artists

Part of Posticum's mission is to support artists, within its means, with accommodation, food, money, and opportunities to appear, so that they can concentrate on their creative work and thereby create value for all of us. We present them below.

JÁNOS ZUDOR

János Zudor (1954-2018) was a vagrant poet from Nagyvárad. His poems were collected and preserved by Posticum after 2000. Our former colleague, Mária Vanyovszki, ensured that the manuscripts did not get lost. The love of János' poems also led the Hungarian poet Balázs Szálinger to Posticum, who organized the publication of the last three volumes together with the association. Zsuzsa Selyem, a literary historian from Cluj-Napoca, mapped János's work on the map of contemporary Hungarian fiction.

However, the relationship between the house and János was more personal than that. After the housing mafia deprived him of his home, he found a home in Posticum for years. The house's staff took care of him and nursed him when necessary. And when his health condition no longer allowed it, the association helped him to be taken into care.

OLIVER BÁDER

Olivér Báder is one of the most talented jazz guitarists in Nagyvárad. He interrupted his studies at the Vienna Conservatory to further his education. He inspired the creation of Posticum's Jazzland. His best-known album was released in collaboration with the Balázs Elemér Group. Make Life Better. He currently lives in Máriakéménden, Baranya County, in the community of András Barcsay's City of Falling Angels.

BORBALA VARGA

Borbála Varga is a painter, writer, and clairvoyant mystic. She was born in Cluj-Napoca and published her first book of poems in the Forward Outpost series at the age of 18. After that, she worked as a volunteer at Posticum for years, and then traveled the world with the association's creative scholarship. She regularly sends her works from wherever she is, be it Greece or Turkey. Her paintings decorate the gallery-guest room of Posticum. She also makes a living from odd jobs: she takes care of the elderly or works as a farm hand.

Gábor Karátson once watched this young lady for a long time during a lecture at Posticum, as she wrote the letters in Leonardo da Vinci's left-handed mirror writing. In his words: "She shouldn't learn, she should teach."

water and oil

I was born in Cluj-Napoca, which is the multicultural and multi-ethnic heart of Transylvania. I am of Hungarian nationality with Romanian citizenship. Both the Romanian state and the Transylvanian background operate several philosophies with foreign countries. One of these is university exchange. Another is the labor market: 24/7 and strawberry and asparagus picking. Transylvania opens mainly to the west, while the other two large regions work with Italian and Greek employers.

I didn't get to Greece with any of these.

My first journey, in 2015, was purely intuitive, new and experimental for me. Before that, I had been choosing my own dictionary and grammar for over two years. Since then, personal decisions have come together to form a story, more in spite of circumstances than encouraged by them.

In the Peloponnese I can hear and understand, stay out and feel it in return. I have reached the point of dialogue and work.

I believe I only really get to know a country when I have to make a living from it. This story is the diary of an olive harvest. The oligo-details are the tastiest, and I have selected them from there.

I feel honored to have been able to work with them without discrimination and hear their dialogues.

It built and encouraged me beyond muscle;

I hope that the story can tell a little bit of this.

Posticum farm

The Posticum farm, spread over 17 hectares, is located in the immediate vicinity of Oradea, halfway between Biharpüspöki and Kisszántó. Its deep, clear water mining lake refreshes you even in the hottest summer, and is excellent for swimming and boating. The lake shore In August 2020, we built a stone labyrinth that is striking even from a bird's eye view, which we intend to be a place of contemplation and self-reflection, in line with millennial labyrinth traditions.

The central part of the farm, with two houses, a kiln, an orchard and an acacia grove, is currently primarily used by our friend and partner, Grund School, for children's programs and alternative education. In the remaining part there are stables and a flock of sheep graze.

The farm awaits our guests and friends: from spring to autumn it is an ideal location for spiritual retreats, camps, children's programs, wine tastings and other gastronomic events.

IMPROVEMENTS IN POSTICUUM

Thanks to the application we won from the Bethlen Gábor Fund in 2021, we strengthened Posticum's wifi network, renewed the television system in the rooms, and purchased a new projector and screen for the ballroom, among other things. New shutters have been installed on the windows in some of the rooms, and the reception has been enriched with a new office machine, which makes printing, scanning and other office work easier. Thank you!
