ZEN, ZAZEN, MEDITATION

ZEN, ZAZEN, MEDITATION

Zen is a practice and a tool. Zen is a means of changing our consciousness and our fulfillment. By practicing Zen, we get rid of the confusion of our thoughts, the restlessness, the constant buzz that burdens our consciousness. Although Buddhism preserved this ancient practice in its purest form, Zen is not a religion. Zen is a practical path, a method that transcends all classification.

Victor Pari has been practicing Zen meditation for more than eight years. Member of the One Drop Zen group in Hungary. He arrived at Posticum in 2021 and had an important role, when Imre Rencsik, the founder of the house, reorganized the hospitality with Niklaus Brantschen, a Swiss Jesuit monk, and started the Zen Hostel. Zen Hostel is run by Posticum and the One Drop Zen community. Every day in the morning and in the evening between 7 and 8:30 Viktor leads a Zen meditation in the house. Those interested can contact him in person, and he will give an introduction to beginners.

István "Taikyo" Running is the leader of the Hungarian One Drop Zen Community, and is a student of Zen master Taigen Shodo Harada. Béla Balázs award-winning feature film cameraman and director, previously taught at Budapest Metropolitan University. It was István Szaladják "Taikyo" who brought Zen to the Posticum. Our artistic and spiritual advisor, our friend.

Taigen Shodo Harada Roshi is a Japanese Zen master and the leading master of the international sangha (Zen community) of One Drop Zen. His students have founded many One Drop communities around the world, which are in constant contact with him. Practitioners regularly visit Japan to further deepen their knowledge and experience at the Harada roshi monastery.
Since 2016, the roshi (ie master) has been regularly visiting and holding sesshin (retreats) at the Posticum.

Being a member of different bands he creates music almost in all genres, his unique melodic style of playing the drums gives a complex music experience. He has toured the USA several times, and he is the only Hungarian jazz musician who regularly plays in China. His previous quartet, which existed from 2004 to 2011, was a very important band on the Hungarian ethno-jazz and world music scene. The music of his new quartet contains less of the folk background but sounds like today's pure acoustic jazz based on post bop elements.

JULY 13 // JAZZTERRACE 2024: BALÁZS JÓZSEF QUINTET

2024 July 13.

BALÁZS JÓZSEF QUINTET

József Balázs – piano
Gábor Cvikovszky – trumpet
Zoltán Zana – sax
Krisztián Lakatos Pecek - bass
Elemér Balázs – drums

admission: donation // start: 19:00

József Balázs graduated from the jazz department of the Ferenc Liszt University of Music, and was already oriented towards jazz during his early classical music training. With his first band, the Bop Machine, he took part in many competitions, such as the Jazz Juniors competition in Krakow, where the pianist received the prize for the best soloist.
The Balázs József Quintet was founded in 2005, and over time it has grown to become a significant domestic representative of melodic, modern cool. In 2007, the band leader won the Lakatos Ablakos Dezső jazz performance scholarship. In addition to his successes in the world of jazz, he is also recognized as an arranger and author in other genres (pop, film music). Back in 2009, in connection with his quintet's debut album (I don't got you mean), Oláh Kálmán wrote about him: ”He improvises in any style of formation, you can feel that he speaks perfectly and uses the native language of jazz with taste.” !

JUNE 28 // JAZZTERRACE 2024: GÁBOR SZALAY ORGAN TRIO

2024 June 28.
GÁBOR SZALAY ORGAN TRIO

Gábor Szalay - Guitar
Albert Horváth – Organ
Balázs Bágyi – Drums

admission: donation // start: 19:00

Most of the trio's program, founded in 2023, consists of their own compositions and the compositions of the excellent jazz composer and pianist Theonius Monk. The joint playing of organ and guitar is not new in jazz music, this fact is also proven by countless recordings of jazz guitarists with organ.
In addition to the fact that they can complement each other in terms of sound, it also has a practical role, as the organist's left hand replaces the double bass, while he can also play harmonies with his right hand in the accompaniment. When the organist improvises, the guitar takes over the accompaniment.
Among other things, this playing together makes the trio's music special.

JUNE 14 // JAZZTERRACE 2024: GRENCSÓ PORT & LEWIS JORDAN

2024 June 14.
GRENCH PORT & LEWIS JORDAN

Lewis Jordan - sax, poetry
István Grencsó – wind instruments
Róbert Benkő - Bass
Miklós Szilveszter – Drums

admission: donation // start: 19:00

For over 20 years, Grencsó and Jordan have enjoyed their international connection. From the early performances together at Gödör at Deák tér, Jelen near Blaha Lujza tér, and Trafó in Budapest, they have inspired each other into a whirlwind of improvisation. Since then, outside of Budapest, they have performed from Györ to Szeged, Békéscsaba and from Magyarkanizsa to Dunaszerdahely.
They have recorded twice on the BMC label (Homespun in Black and White and Local Time). Both musicians thrive in an atmosphere of free exploration, and they shape their sounds in a way to summon the spirits. Those spirits may come quietly, or they may come ferociously, but the summoning is what matters. Grencsó plays saxophones, clarinet, flute, and wind instruments of all kinds.
Jordan plays alto saxophone and adds his poetry to their presentations. Jordan, based in California, leads his Music at Large ensemble there and they have released four recent CDs, with Critical Mass (Innova 073) the latest.
